Serving Others In Kenya: A Trip That Connected Me With Even More Joy

Episode 36 With Peggy O’Neill

Intro to Episode

In this final episode of the year, I’m sharing something deeply meaningful – my recent trip to Kenya and how I became involved with the Little People of Africa Foundation.

I was invited to help the organization with structure and support, but when I arrived, what unfolded touched my heart far beyond anything administrative.

In this episode, I take you with me to Nairobi as we marched through the streets on Dwarf Awareness Day — more than 200 little people proudly carrying signs, singing, chanting, and standing for dignity, inclusion, and medical support. I talk about the government leaders who joined us, the unity that filled the air, and the moment I realized tears were streaming down my face because the joy and empowerment were unforgettable.

I also share the quieter moments like visiting a family farm, experiencing generosity and simplicity, spending time in nature, and remembering how much peace comes from gratitude, connection, and slowing down. This journey invited me to reflect on service, compassion, and what it truly means to say: we all matter.

Why Serving Others Brings Dignity And Belonging

When you are overwhelmed and worn down, it can feel like you have nothing left to give. You may even start to wonder what difference you make anymore. Serving others has a quiet way of strengthening you in those moments, not by asking more from you, but by reminding you that you matter. Both sides of service stand a little stronger in their dignity. In that shared space, you both feel that you belong and your heart heals a little, remembering it was never meant to do life alone.

The Nairobi March And Public Empowerment

I recently was able to go to Africa and help with a march for the Little People Of Africa Foundation. Walking through Nairobi with hundreds of little people holding signs of pride stayed with me. Serving others in that moment was not about helping or fixing anyone. It was about standing together and being visible. I could feel the shift as we walked. People stood taller and smiled wider. There was joy moving through the group. It showed me what happens when people show up for one another and take up space together.

How Serving Others Creates Connection Beyond Words

Serving others does not need a plan, a role, or a title. Sometimes it is just walking beside someone and letting them know they matter. Shared moments create the connection we all crave in ways words can’t sometimes. Music, movement, and presence together open hearts quietly. When people feel safe and included, then meaningful connection happens on its own. That is how a true community starts to form.

Simplicity, Generosity, And Happiness From Within

Seeing how simply Joachim’s mother lives was very impactful for me. She didn’t have much, in terms of what I was accustomed to, but she found such joy in serving others. It pointed out to me just how little we actually need to feel content. Even with very little to give, her generosity flowed easily. Food was shared, laughter came easily, and no one was rushing anywhere. It very effectively reminded me that happiness is not something we chase. It is something we allow.

Rest, Reflection, And Receiving Nourishment

As I look back at that experience in Nairobi, several lessons were clear. First, serving others is not meant to wear you out. It is meant to open your heart, fill it, and heal it. Two, taking time to rest lets your experiences land in your body. Three, Nourishment comes from connection, shared meals, and quiet moments. When you let yourself receive too, the whole process stays sustainable. That balance keeps your heart open and receptive to joy.

Remembering Purpose Through Community And Presence

I want everyone to learn that purpose is not something you have to figure out or earn. You can bring purpose right into any moment you are living, especially through serving others. When you stand with people in care and connection, meaning shows up for you naturally. Community strengthens you just as much as you strengthen it. You belong just as you are. So in times of overwhelm or heaviness in your heart, finding ways to serve others isn’t just one more thing to do. It’s an intentional way to bring you what you need to flourish too.
